TOOTH DECAY is acid damage of the tooth enamel
- by specific bacterial film containing specific bacteria
- The film of bacteria is called DENTAL PLAQUE or BIOFILM
- BIOFILM is often not visible
- but you may feel the rough coating on your teeth with your tongue
- It takes about 18 months of bacteria attack for tooth decay to become visible on Xray as well as visually
- Early decay can be treated with various products
1: Colgate NF 5000 toothpaste
2: Silver fluoride therapy
3: Curasept products
Dental advice is required for use of #1 #2 or #3
- in most cases the early decay can be stopped or reversed and no drilling is required
HOWEVER
Once decay has penetrated the tooth to a certain depth...
Then drilling and filling is required
So think about this when decay is found on a tooth it has been there in some form for quite a while ( there are exceptions)
it's essential to use good therapeutic toothpastes
